How to Create a Capsule Suitcase for Vacation

Packing for vacation should feel exciting, not overwhelming. But if you’ve ever found yourself staring at an open suitcase wondering what to bring (or worse, overpacking and wearing only half of it), you’re not alone. This is where a capsule suitcase comes in! A “capsule suitcase” is a small collection of versatile pieces that mix and match easily, giving you plenty of outfit options without packing your entire closet. Down below, I share with you my favorite tips on how to create a capsule wardrobe for vacation.

Capsule Suitcase Tips

Start with a Simple Color Palette

The secret to a successful capsule wardrobe is choosing pieces that all work together. Start by selecting a color base such as:

White, black, denim, olive or navy. Then add one or two accent colors for variety.

Choose Versatile Clothing Pieces

When building a capsule suitcase, every item should be able to serve multiple purposes.

Instead of packing several outfits that only work one way, focus on pieces that can be styled casually or dressed up depending on the occasion.

Great examples include:

A lightweight dress that could be worn out to dinner or as a coverup

These types of pieces make it easy to create new combinations without packing extra clothing.

The 10–Piece Capsule Packing Formula

One of the easiest ways to simplify packing is to follow a basic formula. For most week-long trips, you can create plenty of outfits with around 10 core clothing pieces.

Here’s a simple breakdown:

Tops

2 casual tees or tanks

1 slightly dressier blouse

1 lightweight layering piece (button-down, cardigan, or denim jacket)

Bottoms

1 pair of jeans or casual pants

1 pair of shorts or a skirt

Dresses

1 versatile dress that can be styled multiple ways

Layers

1 light jacket or sweater

Shoes

1 comfortable walking shoe (sneakers or flats)

1 sandal or dressier option

From these pieces alone, you can easily create 15–20 outfit combinations just by switching up shoes, layering pieces, and accessories.

You of course can’t forget your undergarments!

These undies are my all-time favorites. So comfy, seamless & pack perfectly.

SHOP PADDED TANKS HERE

Say goodbye to bulky bras and hello to built-in support. Padded tanks are a travel dream: breathable, flattering, and supportive enough to wear solo. They’re great for layering under shirts or wearing on their own with shorts or a skirt — plus, fewer layers = cooler travel days.

Great shoe options that are comfy enough to walk in and cute enough to wear to dinner!

Pack Accessories That Change the Look

Accessories are one of the easiest ways to make your outfits feel fresh without adding bulk to your suitcase.

Consider packing a few lightweight pieces such as:

A neutral belt

Sunglasses

A crossbody bag

Simple jewelry

A lightweight scarf or wrap

These small additions can instantly change the feel of an outfit and make repeat pieces look completely different throughout your trip.

Plan Your Outfits Ahead of Time

One of the best ways to avoid overpacking is to plan your outfits before you leave.

Try laying out the pieces you’re planning to bring and mixing them into different combinations. This helps you see exactly how many outfits you can create and ensures everything works together.

A quick tip: take photos of the outfits on your phone so you can reference them while traveling.

Not only does this make getting dressed easier, but it also keeps you from packing items that don’t actually fit into your wardrobe plan.
